Abusive Head Trauma (AHT)

Incidence

​

  • AHT is a major cause of CNS injury in young children.

  • Estimated incidence of 12.8 to 17 per 100,000 in children < 2 years of age and 21 to 33.8 per 100,000 in children < 1 year. 

  • Mortality rate up to 36% 

  • Survivors of AHT are subject to significant morbidity. 

    • Neurological sequelae include motor impairments, speech deficits, seizures and developmental-behavioral disorders.

    • The majority require long-term rehabilitation (up to 83%) 

    • Long-term care creates a significant economic burden

    • Estimated life time cost per AHT patient is $200,000.

Presenting Variables associated with poor outcome

 

  • Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) < 6

  • Low socio-economic status (SES)

  • Symptomatic seizures

  • Acute symptomatic seizures occur in 57% of AHT patients
